I decided to break down a Harry Styles song for the fun of it, so here’s a masterpost. I just wanted to say, I’m not Harry Styles himself, therefore, I’m not confirming anything here. This is solely a theory, therefore, if you’re opinion on who it’s about is different than mine, then that is ok. A theory is a theory.
Now, anyways, let’s get started.
Short Summary: Woman is about a song about an ex-lover of Styles. The song is very self-explanatory as, the lyrics are basically showing Harry’s jealousy side over his ex-lover with a new man that isn’t him. Harry isn’t pleased by the love affair as he still has feelings for his ex-lover. The song is simple, yet honest, and also references the troubling side of his romance with his ex-lover as the two have communication issues with each other. The song also is written showcasing Harry’s point of view in the moment, which is him witnessing his and his ex-lovers public affection, and he isn’t too happy.
Who is the ex-lover and new boyfriend? (Who the song is about?):
Easy! Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris.
How is it about Calvin and Taylor Swift? Well, firstly, it brings us back to the Billboard music awards when One Direction attended along with Taylor and Calvin. Taylor was sitting in the front row and Calvin and Taylor weren’t shy and showing off a lot of public affection, whenever Harry would collect his award with his bandmates, he wasn’t impressed at all by the public affection. He would avoid looking there way, and was very hurt by seeing his ex with another guy that isn’t him.
Here is a GIF of hurt/jealous Harry avoiding looking at Taylor and Calvin.
Here is Harry avoiding looking at Taylor and Calvin as he’s hurt/upset.
In this GIF you can see why Harry was jealous and not too happy.
I hope you can see the shape that I’m in While he’s touching your skin He’s right where I should, where I should be But you’re making me bleed - This is referring to the night of the Billboard awards, where Harry was watching Calvin and Taylor’s public affection. Harry wishes he was in the place of Calvin, and from Harry’s reactions, it makes sense hearing; “You’re making me bleed.” And “I hope you can see the shape I’m in.”
(Yeah, he was very obviously hurt and upset, even from the photos and GIF’s it’s obvious.)
“Tempted, you know Apologies are never gonna fix this I’m empty, I know Promises are broken like the stitches“ - This line is referring to the fact that Harry always apologies, but it doesn’t work anymore. But, this line could also be referring to him wanting Taylor to apologize but, because he’s hurt, an apology won’t mend it. (I believe, it’s him wanting to apologize, but it won’t work.) Which is a reference to; “How You Get The Girl” the stitch lyric seems to be in reference of; “Out of the Woods.”
